What are the symptoms of asthma

Asthma is a lung disease where certain triggers constrict the air ducts and restricting air flow to and from lungs. The first and foremost symptom is difficulty in breathing and others include wheezing, tightness in chess area and coughing.

Asthma is a respiratory disease; therefore its first symptom is difficulty in breathing. This is accompanied by wheezing, coughing and tightness in chest. The symptoms may differ from person to person and for the same person too in different attacks. If the early signs are identified then there is a fair chance to check an asthmatic attack.

What are the symptoms of asthma?

Let us first begin our discussion on what are the symptoms of asthma with the information that asthma is a lung disease with symptoms more or less like allergy. Many people are unaware about the disease. Because they do not know whatare the symptoms of asthma. Asthma is a respiratory disease where the air passage or ducts, called the bronchial tubes, that carry air to and from the lungs. Becomes swollen and sensitive to certain inhaled substances. These substances are often called triggers and may include dust, pollen, moles, cockroaches, dead skins of pets that collect ontapestry, walls, clothes etc., indoor and outdoor air pollution and some food particles including egg and fish. The bronchial tubes get tightened when such substances are inhaled and thus restrict the air from freely flowing in and out of lungs.  Added to this is an increased secretion of mucous in the inside the tubes.

Following are the common symptoms of asthma:

  • Shortness of breath/ difficulty in breathing: Many people experience shortness of breath while lying down. Some patients, therefore, are unable to sleep and prefer to sit or stand the whole night
  • Wheezing: A whistling or squeaky sound while breathing
  • Coughing: it is more in the night and early morning, sometimes while laughing or doing physical exercise.
  • Tightness in the chest area: It may feel that the chest is being squeezed or a weight is kept on it

However, these symptoms are only indicative, because they are very close to allergy symptoms. In our discussion on what are the symptoms of asthma it is important to mention that these symptoms are different for different people. Also a person may not have all the symptoms and face different symptoms during different attacks and these can be either mild or strong. Some people may also experience symptoms of asthma with viral attack or while doing strenuous physical exercise. Others may go without any symptoms for a long period interrupted by intermittent bouts of asthma attacks. When the symptoms become visible and sometimes very strong.Mild attacks which last for a few hours are more common than severe ones, but the severe ones may turn fatal if not treated immediately.

Therefore it is important to identify the early signs of asthma so that an imminent asthmatic attack can be recognised and immediate action can be taken.

Some of the early signs are:

  • Wheezing during or after exercise
  • Coughing in the night
  • Problem in sleeping
  • Signs of cold/allergy
  • Feeling tired all the time

The above signs may not be serious but they should be taken seriously. Because an asthmatic attack can be checked before they become severe.
