Constipation can be an irritating problem and chronic constipation is something that many people are dealing with. It requires millions and millions of dollars as a part of health care expenditure and at the same time. Requires many doctor visits in addition to the various physical problems one can have which include bloating, feeling headache and  leaves you feeling irritable.

The definition of chronic constipation can be different for different people. Some people might define chronic constipation as having infrequent bowel movements over a period of at least 3 weeks. To some people, it means facing extreme difficulties in having or passing stools. A majority of them describe chronic constipation as wanting to sit on the pot and pass stools, but once you sit, not passing any. Chronic constipation means having hard stools when you do have them or a combination of infrequent, hard stools.

By normal standards, it has been found that people who experience less than 3 stools a week or about 3 stools a week may be suffering from chronic constipation. However, many experts feel that people underestimate the frequency of their stools. So it might not be chronic constipation or the definition might not be accurate.

There are some myths associated with chronic constipation. Let us understand some of them in order to be able to be better educated about this:

If you don’t have a bowel movement a day, it is abnormal.

In reality, less than 50% of people have one bowel movement a day.

Myth 2:

Less than 5-6 bowel movements in a week are considered to be cases of chronic constipation.

In reality, about 95 % of all the adults have anything between 3 to 21 bowel movements per week. This range is considered normal and not a case of chronic constipation.

These are just some of the things one should know about chronic constipation and it can be easily tackle. If the right medication and the right kind of diet is followed. Including more fiber in your diet will ensure that you have more regular bowel movements and do not jump to conclusions before consulting your doctor about the various things associated with chronic constipation. This is something that is extremely important, even while diagnosing this. Lack of knowledge will lead you to believe things which are not necessarily true and as a result of that, one might over-exaggerate their situation.
